In 1938, a group of Scandinavian friends living in San Francisco started the Viking Ski Club, as a way to ski and have fun together in the mountains. Today, over 80 years later, we continue to carry on the tradition of friendship in the great outdoors. Ethnically inclusive and spread across the larger San Francisco Bay Area, we come from all walks of life and are drawn together by our enjoyment of outdoor activities year-round—especially when it’s snowing.
The life of our club centers around our cabin, which we have maintained since 1948. Located at Donner Summit, the cabin is near Sugarbowl Ski Resort, Donner Ski Ranch, Soda Springs, and Royal Gorge Cross-country ski area. It’s a short drive to Palisades Tahoe, Northstar, Alpine Meadows, Homewood, and other Lake Tahoe area ski resorts.
It’s also a great summertime area, with proximity to hiking and biking trails, rock climbing areas, and mountain lakes for swimming and boating.
Our cabin is distinguished among Donner Summit Clubs by having a convenient parking lot right outside the front door and a full kitchen in which members can prepare meals. Without a big screen TV, it encourages families to play board games, work on jigsaw puzzles, and socialize.
Our club meets monthly at different locations in the Bay Area, and members contribute to cabin maintenance during summertime work parties at the cabin. Our September picnic and our annual Christmas dinner are also popular ways to nurture and renew VSC friendships. Most of all, our community flourishes during stays at the cabin—preparing a meal together, planning a hike together, or sharing stories and a warm beverage after a long day on the slopes.
