The Viking Ski Club Cabin

The Viking cabin located on Old Highway 40, now known as Donner Pass Road, is right across from the Donner Ski Ranch, and at the intersection of the Mt Judah entrance to Sugar Bowl. Other nearby facilities include ASI (Alpine Skills International) for instruction in Nordic Skiing, and Royal Gorge Cross-Country, which has many miles of groomed trails.
The Viking cabin is homey rather than fancy. We can sleep up to 36 people in bunk beds. Most of the beds are located in the men's and the women's dormitories upstairs, but there are also several separate rooms with two or three bunk beds each, which can be reserved on weekends by families and weekdays by most anyone. Downstairs are a living room, a kitchen, men's and women's bathrooms, ski storage, and members lockers. The kitchen is communal, with two stoves, two sinks, a refrigerator and two long tables. Food preparation is usually done individually except on holiday weekends, when dinner is prepared by a committee and the cost pro-rated among those "eating in". For dining out, a number of restaurants are located on the Summit, but most are down the "hill" in Truckee, via Donner Pass Road. The road to Donner Lake is kept open most of the winter, although after a large snowstorm it may be closed for several days or more. The main road, Interstate 80 is rarely closed, and Donner Pass Road to the old Summit is also cleared right away.
Cabin facilities include individual cold lockers for food storage, assigned lockers for members' gear, ski racks, a ski workbench and stereo equipment. Members bring their own sleeping bags, pillows and towels for their stay. The Viking cabin is completely smoke-free.
The children of a member's guests must be seven years of age or over. Members' children over the age of four are welcome as guests and pay guest rates.
